’The Soul Station’, Ep 1 + 2 Danielle Brathwite-Shirley @ Halle am Berghain 2024

The primary objective was to create an immersive audio environment that matched the striking visuals, innovative gameplay, and profound themes of the project. Drawing on my background in both cinematic sound design and electronic music, I aimed to merge these two disciplines, creating a soundscape that bridges the cinematic experience with the visceral energy of a live electronic music event.

The project encompasses approximately 1 hour and 50 minutes of original music and sound design. A notable feature is the spatial sound composition, strategically distributed across 8 speakers in the second half of the space, incorporating Danielle’s voice to enhance the experience.

Part of a comprehensive survey of Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley’s groundbreaking oeuvre, The Soul Station explores themes of lived experience and speculative fiction to illuminate marginalized histories often simplified or disregarded.

The newly-commissioned game unfolds in an installation reminiscent of a public arena, encouraging audiences to reflect on their own experiences, choices, and biases. In Episode 1, You Can’t Hide Anything, players witness a cataclysmic event in a parallel society where a revolution has overthrown globalized slavery. Episode 2, ‘Are You Soulless, Too?’, shifts focus to the migration of characters between universes and reveals behind-the-scenes insights into the creation of the first episode.

This project brings together dynamic storytelling and interactive audio, creating a compelling, multidimensional experience.
